Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV plans by mid-December to begin replacing potentially dangerous airbag inflators in 371,000 Dodge and Chrysler vehicles in the U.S.
FCA will fix the vehicles even though Takata Corp., which made the inflators, hasn't confirmed the devices are unsafe. The company refers to its initiative as a field action rather than a recall.
The campaign covers 2000-2004 passenger-side and 2004-2007 driver-side devices. Affected vehicles include Chrysler 300 sedans and Aspen large crossovers, plus Dodge Ram and Dakota trucks, Durango SUVs and Charger and Magnum cars.
The campaign targets cars in high-humidity parts of the country. Takata's investigations indicate the explosive used in the inflators is susceptible to moisture that can cause the device to fracture and spray shrapnel into the cockpit.
