Chrysler Group LLC plans to launch a worldwide campaign in January to rewire airbag systems in 2002-2004 model year Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee SUVs to prevent them from deploying randomly.
The recall involves 745,000 vehicles in the U.S., 49,000 units in Canada, 22,000 units in Mexico and 103,000 units sold elsewhere.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which has been investigating the issue for a year, reports 215 cases of Jeep airbags inflating when they shouldn't.
Chrysler says an electrical problem in the air bag control module could cause random deployment of front and side airbags or seatbelt pretensioners. Dealers will install a jumper harness to remedy the problem.
