Chrysler Group LLC says the $1.2 billion it is spending on a new truck and engine complex in Saltillo, Mexico, will create more than 1,100 jobs there by year-end.
The $1.1 billion truck plan began producing the Ram ProMaster commercial vehicle in July. The van, which is based on the Fiat Ducato, will be supplied to the Mexican, Canadian and U.S. markets. The Saltillo plant will continue to produce Ram chassis cab and pickup trucks.
Chrysler also plans to open a new $164 million engine line at the complex early next year to assemble 2.0- and 2.4-liter 4-cylinder Tigershark engines. The plant already makes V-6 and Hemi V-8 engines.
The 2.4-liter engine, which is equipped with Fiat's fuel-saving MultiAir system, will be supplied to Chrysler plants that build the Dodge Dart small car and redesigned 2014 Jeep Cherokee SUV.
