Chrysler Group plans to stop making its 3.7-liter V-6 gasoline engine in Detroit in September.
The company began switching to a more efficient 3.6-liter V-6 engine in 2009. The newer powerplant has now replaced seven V-6 engine variants.
The 3.7-liter V-6 went into production at Chrysler's Mack Avenue Engine Complex II in 2000 and has been used to power Jeep Liberty SUVs and Ram 1500 pickup trucks. Chrysler says it will transfer about 200 workers affected by the shutdown.
The larger Mack I factory on the same site will continue to build 4.7-liter V-8 engines for the Ram 1500, according to the company.
