Chrysler Group LLC is considering plans to make nine-speed automatic transmissions in Tipton, Ind., the Kokomo Tribune reports.
Chrysler says only that it has asked about state and local tax abatements for a possible future investment. The newspaper says Tipton's county commission is scheduled to review the request next Monday.
The facility would be housed in an unfinished 781,500-sq-ft building about 25 miles south of Chrysler's huge Kokomo transmission plant.
The Tipton building was begun in 2007 under Chrysler's $530 million joint venture with Getrag International GmbH to make dual-clutch gearboxes for Chrysler vehicles. But the partnership collapsed in 2008, and the project was abandoned.
