Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. are recalling a combined 459,600 cars with passenger-side sun visors that could be blown loose by a deploying airbag.
The campaigns cover 2001-2005 model Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus midsize sedans and 2001-2005 MMC Eclipse sport coupes and convertibles.
The problem occurs only if the visor is in the down position, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In that situation, the airbag could tear the visor off its mounting rod and propel it toward the passenger. NHTSA says dealers will install a tether strap to retain the visor.
