China reports that its gross domestic product expanded 6.8% in January-March compared with the same period in 2017.
The country’s central government predicts the economy, which grew 6.9% last year, will gain about 6.5% in 2018.
A slightly slower growth rate is widely expected this year. Analysts point to government attempts to tighten borrowing, throttle real estate speculation, close down antiquated factories and shift China’s economic base from trade and investment to more sustainable consumer spending.
China’s trade surplus with the U.S. expanded again. But the country’s total export volume in March shrank 3%, resulting in a rare monthly trade deficit.
