In April General Motors Co. will begin offering a new blind-spot trailer camera system for Chevrolet Silverado fullsize pickup trucks.

The dealer-installed option will be available on 2014-2016 model trucks equipped with a prep package for gooseneck or fifth-wheel trailer hitches. The system will start at $999, excluding labor and installation.

Developed in conjunction with Corona, Calif.-based Echomaster LLC, the package includes two side cameras and a third camera mounted on the top rear edge of the trailer. The side cameras, which are integrated into existing rearview mirror housings, provide a widened field of vision for the driver by showing video feeds on a center-mounted interior display when the corresponding turn signal is activated.

The top-mounted camera displays the view behind the trailer when the vehicle is in reverse. It’s powered by a hardwired line to the trailer lights and wirelessly transmits images to the display via a closed network. An infrared system enhances images in low-light conditions.

Another camera can be placed inside the trailer to monitor livestock. This summer Chevy plans to offer a camera integrated into the center brake light that can show the contents of the pickup bed or assist users with trailer connections.

Drivers can select which view to display from a main menu screen.
