General Motors Co.’s Chevrolet unit is reviving its Blazer nameplate on an all-new midsize crossover that will be launched in early 2019.
Chevy unveiled the new Blazer at an event in Atlanta this week. The Blazer name, which has been used periodically since the late 1960s, last appeared on a rear-wheel-drive truck-based SUV that was discontinued in 2005.
Chevy says the crossover’s sporty styling was inspired by the latest Camaro sports coupe. This includes sleek LED running lights, a large dual grille and darkened door pillars to create a floating roof effect.
Three trim levels will be available, each of which will get a unique grille treatment. The Blazer RS will have blacked-out trim, while the top-end Premier version will sport chrome brightwork.
Two engine choices are available. The base 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 193 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque. The optional 3.6-liter V-6 generates 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque, and it offers a towing capacity of 4,500 lbs.
Both engines feature direct injection and stop/start technology. Each powerplant is mated with a 9-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive—including on/off and full-time twin-clutch variants—is optional. A traction selector allows drivers to change throttle and stability control calibrations for different road conditions.
Available safety features include adaptive cruise control and a rearview camera mirror. The latter can be integrated with a trailer hitch guidance system. A hands-free power liftgate and panoramic twin-pane sunroof are optional.
The interior is highlighted by an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, 4G LTE wi-fi six USB ports and wireless charging. Other goodies include heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, an electronically lockable glovebox and a cargo management system.
GM will produce the Blazer in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, alongside the Chevrolet Equinox crossover and Chevrolet Cruze hatchback.
