General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet unit plans to roll out a service for several 2016 models that can alert customers about needed vehicle repairs before components fail.

The technology, to be delivered through OnStar's connectivity platform, will initially monitor the condition of the battery, starter motor and fuel pump. GM plans to add more components in later model years.

The system collects data from sensors in the vehicle and uses GM-developed algorithms to search for possible performance issues. When it finds a potential problem, it alerts the vehicle's owner via e-mail, text message, in-vehicle alert or through OnStar's smartphone app. The OnStar app already monitors tire pressure, calculates oil change intervals and reports other vehicle data.

Chevrolet's predictive service will debut in the second half of the year in select 2016 model Corvette sports cars, Silverado pickup trucks and Equinox, Tahoe and Suburban SUVs.
