Contract negotiations between the Canadian Auto Workers and General Motors Co. have made "significant" progress, according to the union.
The CAW resumed bargaining in earnest with GM and Chrysler on Tuesday afternoon after reaching a tentative agreement with Ford.
CAW President Ken Lewenza says the union is awaiting GM's latest contract proposal to see how willing the company is to match the terms of the Ford contract. That accord freezes wages, pays bonuses and stretches the period it takes new hires to reach full wages to 10 years. Ford promises to add 600 jobs in Canada.
Lewenza describes the pace of bargaining gains with Chrysler as slower. He says the company is still studying terms of the Ford contract to determine whether it can follow that blueprint.
