Delegates to the Canadian Auto Worker union's national convention have voted almost unanimously to authorize walkouts at Chrysler, Ford and General Motors if new contracts aren't reached by Sept. 17 when the existing pact expires.
Contract negotiations began earlier this month. A strike authorization ballot is a routine step in the bargaining process.
The CAW's last strike at an automaker was against GM in 1996.
