Major carmakers are scrambling to determine how to cash in on data generated by connected cars and how much to share with such tech partners as Apple and Google, Reuters reports.

Analysts say such data could generate some $40 billion in annual revenue worldwide by 2018, more than twice the level set in 2013, through such features as travel aid, usage-based insurance plans, vehicle maintenance monitoring and security services.

Some carmakers, such as Audi AG, plan to develop and license their own apps powered by in-car data. Apple and Google are eager to tap the same data for their CarPlay and Android Auto apps.

Unclear is how willing consumers will be to release information about their whereabouts, driving style and personal preferences in exchange for the convenience of the services offered by such apps.
