Mainstream carmakers are rushing to expand their abilities to update software in vehicles remotely, Automotive News observes.

Wireless updates avoid the need to bring a vehicle to the dealership, making them cheaper for the manufacturer and more convenient for the customer.

AN says the technique, which has been popularized by Tesla Motors Inc., has been adopted by at least five other carmakers: BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. IHS Automotive tells the newspaper many other manufacturers are poised to follow suit over the next 18 months.

Experts say carmakers are likely to expand their use of wireless software updates in two areas. One is to tweak operational software remotely and without owner involvement to improve engine driveability, for example. The second area is to deliver opt-in options such as a new music player or revised nav system graphics.
