Rising worries about the impact of U.K.’s exit from the European Union prompted a 21% drop in new-car sales last month, says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The group says September deliveries sagged to 338,800 units from 426,200 vehicles a year earlier. Demand for diesels plummeted 43% to 170,700 units.
SMMT blames last month’s sharp decline on Brexit worries and unusually heavy sales in August as consumers took advantage of clearance sales ahead of the industry’s changeover to models that meet Europe’s new emission testing protocol.
Sales in the U.K. through the first nine months of 2018 shrank 8% to 1.91 million vehicles.
