New-car registrations in the U.K. rose 1% in July but remain 6% below year-ago levels through the first seven months of 2018.
Last month’s uptick was driven primarily by manufacturers rushing to clear out inventories ahead of a switch to cars certified to meet Europe’s new WLTP (World Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure).
Last month the U.K. registered 163,900 light-duty vehicles, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The group says gasoline-powered models captured 62% of the market, up nearly 10 points. Diesel plummeted 24% to a 32% share.
SMMT reports that sales of hybrids and electric cars in July grew 7% to a record 6% share of the British market.
