Car Production in U.K. Jumped 26% in May
British car plants built 150,800 vehicles in May, up 26% from the same period last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
British car plants built 150,800 vehicles in May, up 26% from the same period last year, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. It was the biggest monthly increase since last August, when output jumped 41%.
Export volume, which accounts for 80% of the U.K.’s output, rose 27% to 94,500 vehicles for the month. Most of the U.K.’s automotive exports go to the European Union. The U.K.’s vehicle output through the first five months of 2016 was 14% higher year on year.
The trade group notes that higher volumes were expected because of plant expansions and new-model launches. It notes that the weakened pound sterling makes local production more financially attractive. But SMMT warns that continued growth for the industry will hinge on establishing economic stability in the wake of Britain’s vote last week to exit the EU.
