SMMT, dismisses the drop as an anomaly, noting that output in a year earlier was unusually strong because of the introduction of several new models. England’s vehicle output through the first seven months of 2018 totaled 999,300 units, down 4%, compared with the same period last year.

The trade group reiterates that the British auto industry still needs “political and economic” clarity at home—and favorable trading terms with the European Union after the U.K. exits the group next year.
