Ford Motor Co. has chosen Multimatic Motorsports in Markham, Ont., to build the Ford GT supercar beginning next year.

The 600-hp two-seater was the hit of last month's Detroit auto show. The mid-engine car will be powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter V-6 and 7-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle.

The GT will employ aluminum front and rear subframes and a body and passenger crash cell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.

Ford has partnered with Multimatic Motorsports for years. The Canadian company's selection to make the new GT suggests Ford will enter the car in the 24 Hours of LeMans race next year. The original Ford GT swept the first three positions of that race in 1966.
