BMW AG is preparing a worldwide recall to repair the power brake system in 176,000 of its 4-cylinder-powered cars.
The campaign, which will begin in December, includes 3 Series sedans from the 2012-2014 model years, 2014 model 3 Series xDrive wagons, 2012-2013 model 528 sedans, 2013-2014 X1 crossovers and X4 roadsters.
All affected cars are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine. BMW says inadequate lubrication in the brake system's vacuum pump could cause a loss of power assist. If that occurs, the driver would need to apply more pressure to the brake pedal to stop the car.
BMW says 76,200 of the cars are in the U.S. Most of the others are in China (25,000 units), Canada (9,400) and Germany (6,800).
