Robert Bosch GmbH says it has begun offering its water-injection technology, which debuted last year on the BMW M4 GTS, to other carmakers. It expects to launch new applications as soon as 2019.
The system, which sprays water into the inlet manifold before fuel combustion to help cool the engine and reduce knocking, can boost fuel economy by 4%—and by as much as 13% during highway driving—and increase power 5%, according to the supplier.
Bosch supplies the water pump, rail and injectors. Water is stored in a separate reservoir that must be refilled about every 1,800 miles.
