Ford Motor Co. is the fourth carmaker in two weeks to announce a recall to replace fuel pumps with internal nickel plating that could jam the device and cause the engine to stall.
The recalls by BMW, Ford, Nissan and Volkswagen cover at least 203,000 vehicles worldwide.
The faulty pumps were supplied by Robert Bosch GmbH. The company blames improperly coated inlet/outlet plates from another supplier that could lead to excessive friction. Bosch used the parts in fuel pumps made at its factories in Toluca, Mexico, and Budweis, Czech Republic.
Ford's recall covers 50,200 of the company's 2014-2015 Fiesta minicars and 2014-model Focus small sedans, Edge small crossovers, Escape small SUVs and Transit Connect compact delivery vans.
Earlier this month nearly 153,000 vehicles were recalled by BMW (70,500 units worldwide), Nissan (76,200 vehicles in the U.S.) and Volkswagen (6,200 vehicles in the U.S.) to replace similarly flawed Bosch fuel pumps.
