BorgWarner Inc. is investing $27 million to expand its Auburn Hills, Mich., headquarters operations.

The program is expected to add 76 jobs related to the research and development of advanced electrification and “clean mobility” technologies aimed at improving vehicle fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The company hired 180 new engineers and completed a 46,000-sq-ft addition of its powertrain technical center at the Auburn Hills campus last October. It now employs more than 500 people at the Auburn Hills site and another 500 elsewhere in Michigan.

As a result of the new investment, BorgWarner has been awarded a $750,000 performance-based grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund. The city of Auburn Hills also is providing an eight-year property tax incentive worth an estimated $52,000.

Auburn Hills beat sites in Ireland, Spain and China to win the investment project, according to Michigan Economic Development Corp.
