BMW AG says it will recall 220,000 3 Series small cars worldwide to replace faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.
The BMW campaign involves vehicles built between December 2001 and March 2003. BMW estimates that about 180,000 of the cars are still on the road, including 42,100 in the U.S.
The same inflator flaw affects about 3.4 million vehicles being recalled globally by General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota most of them produced between 2001 and 2004. In all cases, the defect involves the front-seat passenger frontal airbag system.
Takata reported last month that a manufacturing error resulted in improperly compacted propellant that could produce excessive pressure when the inflators are ignited during a crash.
Carmakers tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the malfunction could spray metal fragments toward the windshield or passenger footwell when the airbag inflates.
