BMW AG says a production version of the electric i Vision Dynamics concept car it unveiled earlier today at the Frankfurt auto show will go on sale by 2021.
The midsize sedan will fit into BMW’s “i” sub-brand lineup between the little i3 electric city car and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports coupe. The car, which rumored to be named i5, will compete with the just introduced Tesla Model 3 electric sedan.
BMW says the concept version of the car can travel 600 km (373 miles) on a charge, reach a top speed of 200 kph (124 mph) and sprint from zero to 100 kph 62 mph) in 4 seconds.
Separately, BMW’s Mini brand unveiled a concept version of the all-electric minicar it plans to put into production in 2019. The three-door coupe has a sealed grille and special side panels to improve aerodynamics.
BMW offered no details about the Mini EV’s powertrain but says the system will be made at factories in Dingolfing and Landshut, Germany. The car itself will be assembled in Oxford, England, alongside piston-powered Mini models.
