BMW AG is preparing to launch a U.S. recall to replace faulty passenger seat occupant detection mats that could crack and fail, thus preventing the passenger airbag from inflating in a crash.

The company will notify owners in January but doesn't expect to begin the campaign until March because of a shortage of parts.

The recall will involve 2006-2007 model 3, 5 and 7 Series cars, most but not all of which are equipped with sport seats.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW notes that in 2008 it conducted a recall to replace an earlier seat occupant sensor system in some of its 2005-2006 models.

BMW says it also will extend the warranties for the sensor mats in 2006-2007 Z4 sports cars, 3 Series cars with standard seats and 5 Series cars with "comfort" seats.
