Chinese regulators have ordered BMW AG to recall 232,100 cars and SUVs with engine bolts that could loosen or break, creating an oil leak that damages the engine.
The campaign, which is scheduled to begin in June, will cover 138,500 imported X Series crossovers and Z4 sports cars made between mid-June 2009 and the end of July 2012. Another 93,600 locally assembled 3 and 5 Series sedans will be recalled by BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.
All affected vehicles are powered by 6-cylinder engines. BMW says the problem is with bolts that attach the housing for the engine's variable valve timing system. If they fail, the engine could lose enough oil to destroy itself.
BMW says it is treating the recall as a China-only campaign for now. But it also has launched an internal investigation to determine if the problem also affects vehicles in other markets.
