BMW Recalls 195,500 Vehicles for Fuel Pump Fix

BMW AG is launching two recalls to reprogram or replace fuel pumps that could fail. The global campaigns involve 195,500 cars and crossover vehicles, nearly 151,000 of them sold in the U.S.
The larger recall is for 2007- to 2010-model 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series and Z4 cars and X6 crossovers equipped with the company's previous-generation twin-turbocharged "N54" inline six-cylinder engine. The campaign involves about 130,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 30,000 sold elsewhere.
All affected models are fitted with a high-pressure fuel pump whose performance could degrade, causing the engine to stall or run with less power.
The second recall covers 35,500 X5 crossovers built during the 2008 model year and equipped with naturally aspirated inline six engines. These engines have a low-pressure fuel pump that could wear out prematurely and cause the engine to stall.
BMW says 20,800 of the affected vehicles were sold in the U.S. Most of the others are in China, Canada, Japan and Russia, according to the company.
