BMW AG has released images of its upcoming X7 large SUV/crossover ahead of the public debut of the car in concept form at the Frankfurt auto show next week.
The big six-seater is scheduled to go into production late next year , with sales beginning in early 2019. The car will compete with such luxury SUVs as the Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
The concept X7 is propelled by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. BMW has provided no details about the system except to say the main power source will be a twin-turbo gasoline engine. Media reports predict V-6 and V-8 iterations and perhaps a V-12 option. The vehicle will be able to run in all-electric mode, but BMW hasn’t revealed the range.
On the outside, the X7 features an enormous grille, narrow headlamps and taillamps and sharp exterior lines. Prominent L-shaped vents define the lower corners of the front and rear of the vehicle.
Inside is a minimalist interior that’s loaded with advanced electronic features and connectivity. BMW says the style signals the company’s future design direction. An enormous glass roof is framed with chrome trim outside and supported inside by a distinctive Y-shaped structure.
The concept rides on 23-inch wheels designed with aerodynamic inlays between the spokes. BMW notes that X7’s wheel wells have circular rather than squared-off cutouts, a first for the company’s X series SUVs.
