BMW Ponders Next Model for its “i” Series

BMW AG tells Automotive News Europe it will add a third model to its "i" series of high-tech, low-emission vehicles sometime after 2020.
The lineup currently includes the i3 electric sedan ($43,300) and high-performance i8 plug-in hybrid sport coupe ($136,700).
Klaus Froehlich, who heads BMW research, tells ANE the third model will continue the company's practice of giving its i-series vehicles unique designs rather than retrofitting existing piston-powered models. Like the i3 and i8, the new car is likely to feature a cutting-edge powertrain and extensive use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic.
Froehlich says BMW hasn't yet decided on a body type for the new model. Some observers expect a design that targets the fast-growing crossover vehicle market.
