BMW AG says it may introduce its all-electric i3 city car in India, pending clarity of the government’s evolving policy on electrification.

BMW Group President Vikram Pawah tells reporters that plug-in hybrids are a promising interim step for the country to begin a shift to electrified mobility. The company plans to introduce its exotic i8 Roadster hybrid in India later this year.

BMW’s worldwide sales of hybrids and all-electric vehicles jumped by two-thirds to a combined 103,100 units in 2017. In India, demand last year for the company’s piston-powered vehicles climbed 25% to 9,800 BMW and Mini brand vehicles.

BMW currently operates 45 sales outlets in 31 Indian cities. The company expects to expand to 50 retail sites by 2020.
