BMW AG expects to begin prototype road tests later this month of a new X2 small crossover expected to go on sale in 2017, sources tell Autocar.

The British enthusiast magazine says the X2 will use the same ULK front-drive/all-wheel-drive platform that carries BMW's 2 Series Tourer models and smaller X1 crossover.

The new vehicle will be offered with 3- and 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, including a 228-hp version of the B48 powerplant currently available in the 2 Series ActiveTourer crossover, Autocar reports. The magazine says a 300-hp iteration of the twin-scroll turbocharged 4-banger will be used in an M version of the X2 in 2018.

Like BMW's larger X4 and X6 crossovers, the X2 will feature a steeply angled tailgate. Autocar predicts the interior will borrow heavily from the X1.

The X2 could be shown publicly in concept form as early as next March's Geneva auto show, according to the report.
