In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the launch of its iconic 2002 compact coupe, BMW AG unveiled a one-off modern design study of the model last weekend at the Villa d’Este concours d’elegance in Italy.

BMW says the original 2002, which it hails as one of the most significant cars in its history, still influences virtually every new vehicle it produces. The 1973 version of the coupe was the first mass-produced European car with a turbocharged engine, according to the carmaker.

Dubbed the 2002 Hommage, the new concept model is based on BMW’s current M2 sports coupe. The new concept retains the 2002’s three-box structure—but with a far more aerodynamic design—along with wide track, flared fenders and retro-styled headlights.

The original vehicle’s chrome strip along its shoulder line is replaced with a carbon fiber strip. Other updates include a “shark nose” front fascia, unique twin kidney grille and carbon fiber front spoiler. It also gets hidden door handles and quad exhaust piping.

The 2002 was the forbearer to the 3 Series, which replaced it in 1975.

In addition to the concept coupe, BMW unveiled the R 5 Hommage motorcycle at the Villa d’Este event. It also showed its six previous tribute models, including the Mini ACV 30 (1997), Coupe Mille Miglia (2006), M1 Hommage (2008), 328 Hommage (2011), Concept Ninety motorcycle (2013) and 3.0 CSL Hommage (2015).
