BMW AG may one-up this year’s 8 Series coupe with a larger, more luxurious sport sedan, Autocar reports.
Design chief Adrian van Hooydonk tells the British enthusiast magazine that his team is evaluating a variety of options for 2021 and beyond. This could include a 9 Series sedan with coupe-like styling.
“We won’t stop here,” Hooydonk says about expanding BMW’s lineup beyond the 8 Series (pictured). A new coupe helps “kickstart” the next level of design, he notes, adding that it’s his job to offer more ideas than the carmaker can build.
If approved, a new 9 Series likely would share a platform and engines with the 8- and 7 Series models, Autocar says. Such a vehicle could compete against the Mercedes-Maybach S600 in the upper echelon of the luxury market.
A 9 Series flagship model also could lend itself to SUV/crossover and “i”-badged all-electric variants. Autocar notes that BMW already has trademarked every name between i1 and i9, iX1 and iX9, and X1 and X9.
