BMW AG is working with Microsoft Corp. to create an open platform to enhance the “natural” conversation capabilities of the carmaker’s new personal assistant and other voice-actuated systems.

BMW launched its Intelligent Personal Assistant technology earlier this year in several vehicles. The system allows users to control various vehicle features through voice commands, ask questions and otherwise interact verbally with their vehicles.

The partnership with Microsoft promises to make such interactions more personalized and natural sounding. This could allow the assistant to remind drivers that it’s time for an oil change and schedule an appointment, or access emails and calendar appointments while driving.

The system would leverage Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and artificial intelligence technologies. Microsoft engineers in Seattle are collaborating with BMW’s team in Germany to improve the enabling voice recognition technology and to develop new applications.
