BMW AG confirms it will join the Formula E electric vehicle race league as an official manufacturer for the 2018/19 season.
The Bimmer race cars, which will be run by the Andretti Formula E team, will feature a new electric drivetrain developed by the carmaker.
BMW has supported Andretti’s Formula E team as an “official partner” since the series started in 2014. The expanded relationship has been in the works for about a year.
BMW says its Formula E involvement already has led to several improvements for the production EVs the company markets under its “i” sub-brand. Many of the same engineers work on both programs, the company notes.
