BMW AG's new i3 electric sedan earned a safety rating of four stars out of a possible five from Euro NCAP after a "poor" score for pedestrian protection.
The little EV, which went on sale in Germany earlier this month, scored 86% and 81% for adult and child occupant safety, respectively. Euro NCAP says the car did particularly well in its side barrier crash test.
But the i3 scored only 57% for pedestrian protection. Testers say the car's front bumper received maximum points for protecting a pedestrian's legs. But the front edge of the hood earned no points, and the surface of the hood earned only adequate or marginal scores.
