BMW Expands Drivetrain Recall in N. America
BMW AG is recalling 134,000 all-wheel-drive SUVs in the U.S. and Canada to replace defective drivetrain joint seals that could cause the front wheels to lose power.

BMW AG is recalling 134,000 all-wheel-drive SUVs in the U.S. and Canada to replace defective drivetrain joint seals that could cause the front wheels to lose power.
The callback expands a campaign last year to fix the same problem in 21,000 vehicles. The new recall covers 2011-2014 model X5 and X6 SUVs.
BMW says the seals could fail, allowing dirt and water to contaminate the universal joints. If a joint fails, it would cut off power to the front wheels. Continued operation could eventually damage other vehicle parts and render the vehicle inoperable.
BMW reports numerous warranty claims but not crashes related to the flaw. Dealers will replace the front driveshaft assembly when the recall begins in late April.
