BMW AG has launched sales of its new 4 Series coupe, a larger and more distinctively styled version of the 3 Series coupe it replaces.

BMW says the longer and wider stance of the 4 Series gives it a sportier look than its 3 Series predecessor. The new model also adds fender vents behind the front wheel well, a styling element once reserved for high-performance M variants of its models.

The company says the 4 Series model has a sportier feel than the 3 Series coupe, thanks to improvements in the steering system, an ideal 50:50 front/rear weight distribution, aerodynamic tweaks and the lowest center of gravity (less than 20 inches) of any vehicle BMW currently sells.

The rear-wheel-drive car, which will be joined later this year by a convertible, is being offered with a choice of three engines: a 3.5-lter inline six, 2.8-liter four-banger and a 2.0 liter diesel (the diesel is not available in the U.S.). All three powerplants are fitted with BMW's twin-turbo system.

Buyers have a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. All-wheel drive is optional for gasoline-powered models.

The 4 Series is fitted with automatic stop-start, brake energy regeneration, a shift indicator lamp and light-weight materials that make the new coupe 20-45 kg (44-99 lbs) lighter than a 3 Series coupe. An "eco pro" engine mode can reduce fuel consumption 20%, according to the company.

The 4 Series with automatic gearboxes also introduces BMW's first coasting mode system. It decouples the powertrain when the driver backs off the accelerator, enabling the car to coast with no engine braking at speeds between 30 mph and 100 mph.
