The next-generation BMW M3 coupe and sedan will be powered by an inline six-cylinder engine, according to Web site f30post.com, which cites Ludwig Willisch, president of BMW North America Inc.
BMW had been considering a V-6 version of the current model's 4.0-liter, 415-hp V-8 but decided against it, Willisch says. F30post.com speculates the new engine will have two or more turbochargers and produce about 450 hp. Last year Edmunds.com predicted a similar powertrain with the same output.
The next M3 isn't expected until at least the end of next year. F30post.com says the more powerful new model also is expected to be lighter, faster and more efficient than the current M3.
