BMW AG’s plug-in hybrid i8 coupe is getting a mild facelift and power upgrade for the 2019 model year.

The 2019 model features a 11.6-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, up from 7.1-kWH for the current i8, thanks to a 70% increase in cell capacity. The car’s electric driving range is increased 30% to 18 miles.

An improved electric motor boosts the i8’s overall output from 357 hp to 369 hp. The electric motor powers the front wheels via a two-speed automatic transmission, while BMW’s 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine drives the rear wheels through a 6-speed automatic. Top speed is listed at 155 mph.

The 2+2 i8 coupe and all-new i8 roadster also feature an updated version of BMW’s iDrive center console control system. The 2019 coupe will be publicly unveiled at next month’s Detroit auto show.
