British battery charging system provider Chargemaster plc expects there to be more than 1 million electric vehicles in operation in the U.K. by mid-2022.
The nine-year-old company, which claims to be the U.K.’s largest provider of battery charging systems, says the region’s EV fleet has soared to more than 100,000 units today from fewer than 2,000 five years ago.
The 1-million-unit bogey is based on a “modest” 7% sales increase per year for EVs, according to CEO David Martell. But he doesn’t rule out steeper sales increases that could lead to as many as 1.4 million EVs on U.K. roads by 2022.
Chargemaster attributes the EV sales boom to falling purchase prices, longer driving ranges, faster charging times and greater consumer awareness and acceptance. The number of models available also continues to grow.
Earlier this month Chargemaster opened a showroom for EVs in London’s Milton Keynes suburb. The 4,000-sq-ft, multi-brand Electric Vehicle Experience Centre features cars from BMW, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault and Volkswagen, which consumers can test drive and compare.
