Lars Nyberg has resigned as chairman of airbag supplier Autoliv Inc., effective immediately. He will continue as a board member until the company's 2014 shareholder meeting in May.

Autoliv has appointed Jan Carlson, the company's president and CEO, to the additional role of interim chairman.

Autoliv emphasizes that Nyberg's departure is not the result of any disagreement with the company. It says he indicated he did not want a continuing government investigation of Swedish telecommunications company TelisaSonera AB, where he was once CEO, to "distract from Autoliv's continued success."

Nyberg joined Autoliv as a director in 2004 and had been board chairman since December 2011.
