Autoliv Inc. says it has signed deals with several carmakers to supply as many as 25 million airbag inflators in 2015-2016 to replace recalled units made by rival Takata Corp.
Autoliv said earlier it will spend roughly $50 million to expand its inflator plant in Utah to handle the new orders. The company adds that it is in talks to supply millions more.
An estimated 24 million faulty Takata airbag systems have been recalled worldwide in the past six years to replace inflators that could explode when activated. The campaigns accelerated in the U.S. last year, overwhelming Takata's ability to supply enough replacement inflators.
