Autoliv Inc. says defects in its airbag and seatbelt pretensioners systems could trigger the recall of as many as 400,000 late-model vehicles worldwide, Reuters reports.
The Swedish company didn’t indicate which vehicles might be affected. But it says the defective parts were produced this year between April and November.
Autoliv tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the propellant system in about 267,000 of its seatbelt systems in the U.S. could explode when activated by a crash. The device is intended to tighten an occupant’s seatbelts during impact to improve protection.
Separately, the company has advised NHTSA the electronic controller used to trigger its airbags and seatbelt pretensioners could fail in about 114,000 vehicles. Reuters says Autoliv reports no crashes or injuries related to the defects.
