Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has released design sketches of the Quattro plug-in hybrid supercar concept it will unveil at the Frankfurt auto show next month.
The car echoes the Sport Quattro S1 all-wheel-drive rally car Audi built in 1984-1985. The concept is expected to go into limited production in 2016 as the brand's most expensive and technologically advanced model.
The concept's plug-in hybrid powertrain mates a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine that makes more than 600 hp and a 170-hp electric motor to collectively push output to nearly 800 hp.
Power will be channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox equipped with a torque-sensing system that manages power to each wheel individually.
Audi has offered no other details about the concept supercar. But media speculation suggests the hybrid will ride on a modified version of VW's front-engine, front-drive "MLB" (modular longitudinal matrix) configuration, which currently carries Audi's A4 through A8 cars and Q5 crossover vehicle.
