Audi AG will use next week's Detroit auto show to introduce the first gasoline-powered version of its SQ5 high-performance crossover vehicle.

The new model features the same 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine that powers Audi's S4 and S5 performance sedans, in this case rated at 354 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque. The standard Q5 crossover comes with a 272-hp version of the V-6.

Audi says the SQ5 can zoom from zero to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds, reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and deliver 21 mpg on the European test cycle.

Audi debuted the SQ5 in Europe last summer with a twin-turbocharged V-6 diesel engine that makes 313 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. That model, which is not sold in the U.S., delivers performance similar to the gasoline-powered version but is rated at 33 mpg on the European test cycle.

The SQ5 rides 1.2 inches lower than the standard Q5 and uses springs and dampers tuned for a sportier ride. A two-mode, eight-speed Tiptronic transmission delivers power to the wheels through Audi's signature quattro all-wheel-drive system. Other standard features include 20-inch wheels, electromechanical steering, sport seats and xenon headlights.

Audi says the gasoline-fueled SQ5 was developed specifically for such markets as North and South America, Russia, China, Japan and South Korea. It will go on sale in the U.S. in the third quarter. The company has not yet announced pricing.
