Audi AG and Schaeffler AG have signed an agreement to co-develop the drivetrain for Audi’s Formula E electric race car.

The three-year partnership, which runs through the 2019-2020 season, will include joint development on the electric motor, suspension and power electronics system. The base specifications for Formula E’s next-generation vehicle have been finalized, and some components already are being tested.

Schaeffler—which makes starter-generators, wheel hub motors, e-axles and 48-volt systems—has been involved in Formula E since the series was launched in 2014. Audi had been participating informally for several years and last autumn announced plans for a factory-backed program of the  ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team for the 2017-2018 campaign.

Formula E serves as a showcase and test bed for electric car technology with races held on temporary street circuits around the world. The current season ends July 30 in Montreal.
