Audi AG is recalling 139,200 of its A6 and A7 series sport sedans to fix front passenger seats that may lose their ability to detect an occupant and control the airbags correctly.
The affected seats contain a weight-sensing mat that tells the airbag system when and if to deploy in a crash. If the mat fails, the passenger airbags won’t deploy when they should.
A mat malfunction would cause a light that indicates when the passenger seat isn’t being used to remain illuminated even if the seat is occupied. Owners who detect a problem shouldn’t let anyone sit in the passenger seat until it can be fixed.
Audi will begin notifying owners about the campaign at the end of July. Dealers will replace the recalled mats with a new design that provides better durability.
