The 2019 model features a wider honeycomb grille with a black-trimmed surrounding frame. The aluminum bar that crossed the grille on the outgoing model has been removed.
Three slots have been added between the grille and the hood, similar to the design of Audi’s 1980s-era Quattro coupe. And the air intakes behind the doors have been enlarged to enhance cooling.
In the rear, the diffuser and full-width air vent have been redesigned. Other changes include switching from a rectangular to a rounded tailpipe design.
Media reports say the base 5.2-liter V-10 engine is tuned to make 562 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, up 5% and 3%, respectively, to help offset 20 kg (44 lbs) of new emissions equipment. In the renamed R8 V10 Performance model (previously known as the V10 Plus), output is increased about 1% to 611 hp and 417 lb-ft.
Both versions of the V-10 engine are mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard.
The new R8’s suspension has been tweaked to improve stability and precision, according to Audi. The carmaker also has dialed more response and feedback into the steering system and retuned the brakes to reduce stopping distance.
Offered as a coupe and convertible, the new R8 is due in Europe early next year. Availability in the U.S. and other markets will follow later.
